Your first therapy session: what to expect
A gentle guide to the questions, conversations and choices that can come with starting therapy.

You do not need the perfect words
You can begin with what has been difficult lately. It is okay to be uncertain, to take your time, or to say that you do not know where to start.
The first conversation
A therapist may ask about your concerns, daily life and what you would like to change. You can ask about their approach, qualifications, session arrangements and fees before deciding on next steps.
Understand privacy
Ask how information is stored and when confidentiality has limits, such as serious safety concerns or legal requirements. Those limits should be explained at the beginning of care.
Make room for your questions
You can discuss what feels comfortable and whether the approach suits you. Progress varies, and no responsible clinician can guarantee a particular result or timeline.
